In her first book, The Glass Castle, author Jeannette Walls paints a portrait of her dysfunctional, endearing family. Half Broke Horses a “true-life novel,” satisfies the reader’s curiosity about the events that lead up to the memoire. Encouraged and supported by her mother, Walls focuses on the life of her maternal grandmother, deftly laying the foundation for future events.
This book delivers on many levels. It’s a pleasant read that gives voice to Lily Casey Smith. Walls writes casual, poetic prose as she describes the colorful characters and bigger than life adventures that follow a girl growing up in the West at the turn of 20th century America.
This book can stand-alone or be read alongside The Glass Castle. I read them in the order written, but it would be just as interesting to read Half Broke Horses first. Tim read it too and we both give it a 4.5 out of 5.
I’d love to hear what you think – happy reading!
