What is happening to my hearing? I have been sitting here for an hour trying to concentrate on my checkbook enough to pay bills and it’s going nowhere. I just keep hearing the kid’s giant elephant feet moving about the house. The occasional scuttle as they fight over a toy follows the herd’s path. Occasionally, one stray calf leaves the pack to tattle on the others. All in all I am living in the wild here, and there is a reason animals don’t keep checkbooks. No, it has nothing to do with opposable thumbs and everything to do with not being able to focus.
Remember there are only three moving. Grace is hanging out in the swing sleeping in that deep infant way that seems almost desperate – And why not? Could you sleep through a herd of pachyderms circling you like hawks knowing you weighed less than your average road kill? Not pretty – I know.
Alright, so what have I gotten done? I chose my meals from Dinner by Design for the month. I put two books on hold at the public library. And I left a message with our babysitter. If I can procrastinate just 35 more minutes I can turn on Martha Stewart and claim that it’s an investment into my education as a homemaker. I’ll have to start dinner by 4pm and the witching hour starts at 5pm, so I’m home free after that.
As a rule I hate winter and try not to go outside anymore than I have to, but I have tried to push the kids out to play. They evidently take after their mother because they return after just a few minutes and I have to stop what I am doing to help them remove the giant layers of clothing that needs to be dried and re-packed for school tomorrow. However, next week it may get up into the 50s and I’ll be able to re-introduce the herd to lengthy grazing on the Caledonia Plains and actually get something done.
Until then, I think I’ll just sit here a minute and try to catch a little vitamin D before the beasts decide it’s snack time…
